to muse about

So we are in the middle of a huge project. Writing six years of Bible curriculum for all the Baptist Haiti Mission Schools (about 350 or so schools in the country of Haiti). It is a group effort. But as I do my small part, the Lord is revealing His character to me in new and powerful ways.

I was working on writing the story of Sodom and Gomrrah. Something jumped out at me. Gen. 19:14. When Lot goes to warn his two son-in-laws that the city is about to be destroyed and they needed to get out fast. The two men thought Lot was joking. (To laugh out loud in merriment or scorn) Interesting.

Why do you think that was? Was Lot just a practical joker? That theory doesn't quite sit well with his being one of the cities leaders-sitting at the city gates. Or was Lot characterized by making a mockery of God?

Weigh in please...

I think his sons-in-law didn't believe him because he was a man not to believe! Lot had such a poor character and probably did stupid things (i.e. he was greedy and took the best land) that his family did not trust him very much. A bad testimony. We could teach the kids about how important having a good testimony like Abraham is and not like Lot's.

P.S. I'm catching and learning a lot more things about these Old Testament people, it's great! God's been showing me different things.

The NT calls him a righteous man.

2 Peter 2:7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard);

And Abraham "argued" with god over that point in order to save the city.

Gen 18:26 And the LORD said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake." 27 Abraham answered and said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." 29 Again he spoke to him and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." 30 Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." 31 He said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." 32 Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it." 33 And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
